Viktoria Sorochinski a quitté l’ex-Urss avec ses parents en 1990, à l’âge de
11 ans. Après avoir vécu en Israël, elle poursuit ses études aux Beaux Arts de Montréal, puis à New York, où elle vit actuellement.
C’est à Montréal qu’elle a commencé en 2005 à photographier une petite fille, alors âgée de 3 ans et sa mère de 23 ans, également russes. Elle mène toujours aujourd’hui ce travail subtil d’observation et d’interprétation en captant les passages de l’évolution d’Eve et de sa relation avec Anna.
Au centre de ce récit : l’enfance et son corollaire de fantaisies, de peurs ainsi que « l’apprentissage » de la maternité. S’appuyant sur les mythes, les croyances populaires et la perception enfantine du bien et du mal, Viktoria traduit dans des mises en scène soignées, aussi magiques qu’inquiétantes, le monde imaginaire fortement habité d’Eve et la relation complexe et intense qu’elle entretient avec sa mère. La personnalité et la présence de la petite Eve hantent chaque image.
Face à la camera, un étrange jeu de rôles s’installe entre les deux protagonistes, et entre elles et la photographe. Derrière la fiction, on perçoit les réelles tensions, la fragilité d’Anna et la détermination d’Eve. Sorte d’Alice au Pays des désenchantements, la petite Eve semble tenir enfin, à elle seule, les ficelles de leurs équilibres et du récit lui-même.
Viktoria, en complice attentive, voit et prévoit, elle rend perceptible un univers secret fait de signes et de visions. Captivé par ses images parfaites, où aucun détail n’est laissé au hasard, habité par tant d’inquiétants mystères, par le sens du merveilleux, le spectateur est vite perdu, comme dans un jeu de miroirs.
Un petit film vidéo, conçu tel une bande son de l’exposition, ajoute un vague sentiment d’angoisse et de malaise à ce travail d’une sensibilité rare et intense.
