MELTING - Hélène BELLENGER

Performances and installations - CIRCULATION(S) 10 YEARS

Hélène BELLENGER used the cyanotype technique to exhibit the rapid melting of the Selle glacier in of the Ecrins national park. Arranged on squares of paper, previously brushed with cyanotype, small pieces of ice, taken directly from the glacier, melt in the sun and slowly activate the photosensitive mixture. For a week, the young artist experiments this repetitive and meticulous operation, transforming the glacier into a real production workshop. The Prussian blue flows form on the paper and gradually soak up the pieces of ice, illustrate the rapid disappearance of the Selle glacier. These images, produced as part of the first edition of the residence Envers des Pentes, offer a reverse shot to the “postcard” images of these endangered spaces, while paying homage to 19th century photographic expeditions.

Part of the “La Coulure” project, 2019 – 2020, this project win the Nopoto 2019 research and creation award.
