The images in this series show some of the offerings made by Chinese families to someone who has died, to accompany them in the afterlife until reincarnation.

Made using Joss paper, all the photos have been burned, in line with the tradition.

About the artist

Born in Hong Kong in 1977, Kurt Tong became a full-time photographer in 2003. He was the winner of the Luis Valtuena International Humanitarian Photography Award and the city of Port St. Elpidio Prize with his first series documenting the treatment of disabled children in India. He then gained his master in documentary photography at the London College of Communications and began working on much more personal projects.
