This is a story of love and loss with social inequality at its heart, asking whether we really make choices in the course of our lives, or are some of them already predetermined. Within this personal and social geography of one family, these two related series, made over twenty years apart, question the notion of choice and opportunity in the course of our lives. Does choice depend on where we live? On our place on the economic and social ladder?
Family (1994) features the daily life of Margaret Mitchell’s late sister and her three children as they navigated through di cult emotional and socio-economic circumstances in Scotland.

In This Place (2016-2017) revisits the lives of these grown-up children, now with children of their own, in a story of love, loss and endurance within their circumstances.
