KACPERAK Michalina

Soft spot

Poland

2022

Michalina Kacperak was 16 when her youngest sister was born and has always been fascinated by her imagination and courage. The photographer was brought up in a small town in southern Poland by an alcoholic father. A dysfunctional home is a place full of contradictions. You may leave, but it never leaves you. When you visit again, you just want to run away. The series Soft Spot tells the story of a place that is both one’s only shelter and a prison. A safe place for a child is often his/her imagination. It puts a spell over reality and helps with survival. In a metaphorical visualisation of childhood memories and emotions, Michalina Kacperak observes and documents a stage in her young sister’s life when she gradually stops being a child.
