Travel Without Moving is an imaginary journey through the pages of explorers’ diaries, accounts of merchants and missionaries, told through the original photographs of Federico Ciamei. He has imagined these travellers going to unknown places, bringing back stories that have become legends. Who could then have questioned the truth of their words? As Marco Polo wrote, we must believe them as they have witnessed things with their own eyes.
Today most of the world has been explored and catalogued. Huge data archives are now accessible, so vast that the information is almost lost. Using their diaries as a guide, modern-day explorer Ciamei repeats their experience in the digital age. And who could question the authenticity of his discoveries?

About the artist
Federico Ciamei was born in Rome in 1974. He lives in Milan where he work as an independent photographer for many international magazines. His artistic practice explores our dreams and desires and questions what motivates us to want what we do not have. His series Travel Without Moving was published by Skinnerbox editions in 2016.
