WIECZOREK Agata

Artefacts

Poland

2022

Our current relation to the body and death has laid ideological grounds for medical intervention and bio-politics. Agata Wieczorek’s photographic series Artefacts and the short film Growing (Le Fresnoy) examine the recent intersections between the medical and the high-tech industries. The photographer uses peripheral elements pertaining to current medical knowledge in simulation centres as an allegory for bio-political regimes and their consequences. We witness a dystopian reality where simulated and real experiences merge. The human body is reduced to its mere biological potential – such as the ability of the female body to procreate. The photographer addresses the recent restriction of abortion rights in Poland.
