Working on my Tan: The Ultimate Tanning Guide

Italy

2024

“I’ve always thought of the beach as a utopia, fantasized about from afar throughout the year. The words ‘summer holiday’ conjure up dreams of glistening beaches, scorching sun and the perfect golden tan.

“Growing up, I noticed how much importance women in my culture gave to tanning. The wish for a tan was almost universal. Today, despite being older, coming back from a beach holiday without a tan feels like a faux pas. Taking a closer look at the rituals and routines that I, my peers and many Italian women practice to get that glow, I wondered about this behaviour that is considered ‘normal’ and ‘acceptable’ in the sun. In this series, I tried to depict these rituals in a satirical way. I used an exaggerated, almost kitsch aesthetic, with an aim to challenge the common belief that these practices are healthy and harmless.” – GS
