Pingelap, a tiny island in the Pacific Ocean, has a very high percentage of achromotopsia amongst its inhabitants. Achromotopsia is a hereditary condition that causes complete colorblindness. The colorblind islanders see the world in black and white. In a photographic attempt to see the world through their eyes the series ‘The Island of the Colorblind’ consists of three types of images: infrared images and black and white images that had color painted back into them by achromatic-painters.

About the artist
La photographe belge Sanne de Wilde est diplômée de l’Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts de Gand, en Belgique, depuis 2012. La série The Dwarf Empire a été récompensée du Photo Academy Award 2012, dans les categories Volkskrant Magazine et De Morgen, ainsi que du International Photography Award Emergentes DST en 2013. Samoa Kekea, qui traite de l’albinisme aux Samoa, a quant à elle, reçut le Nikon Press Award 2014, dans la catégorie meilleur jeune photographe. Le British Journal of Photography a nommé Sanne de Wilde l’un des “meilleurs talents emergent au monde”. Depuis 2013, Sanne travaille en tant que photographe auprès du journal et magazine néerlandais De Volkskrant.
