He has lived with dementia on a daily basis since he was born. His grandfather’s severe dementia and inability to speak made him question his perception of reality from a very young age. Similar questions began to reappear in recent years while he was spending time with his grandmother. She cared for his grandfather until his death in 2008, and now she is struggling with her own dementia. In order to understand her perspective, he began to explore her past as broadly as possible. In doing so, he reflects on the memories she still carries in her body and the postmemories that have been passed down to him. Through personal narratives, the project examines Slovenian collective history, rejects institutionalised histories as ultimate truths, and compares them to the fragility and unreliability of memory.

About the artist
Born in 1996 in Kranj, Slovenia, Matevž Čebašek graduated from the Royal Academy of Arts, The Hague with a Bachelor’s degree in Photography in 2024. For his graduation work, he received a stipend from The Stichting tot Steun. His work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions across Europe and was selected as the winner of the Encontros da Imagem Award 2025.
