Hiding and Seeking

Hiding and Seeking uses performance and iconography to reflect on the invisible violence and oppression towards women within family environments.

“Using body postures, gestures and domestic objects, I deconstruct ‘the postures women should take’ in their daily life to resist patriarchal culture. I recreate the traumatising experiences that have left their imprint on my body, using my personal view as a political lens; I symbolically represent both my oppressed and resisting self within the family environment. My work explores the interaction between ‘vision’ and ‘cognition’, using the everyday to disturb the appearances of traditional domestic discipline imposed on women and inviting viewers to reflect on the power dynamic entrenched in the home.”– TW

About the artist

Born in 1997, the artist Tianyu Wang is based in Switzerland. She uses “new photographic acts” to transform acts into stories and create a fusion of the subject’s and photographer’s roles to question conventions. She explores the “gaps” in memory, experience and imagination, connecting personal experience to collective history to transform individual consciousness into a shared one.
