masonn, a long-term, transmedia and transnational project, focuses on vernacular architecture* and mystical realism** of four Black Atlantic countries: Guadeloupe, Brazil, the Ivory Coast and the United States.
Through their history, Afro-diasporic populations have created unique homes and cultural constructions, thus demonstrating their singular way of creating architecture. These are not just about physical buildings, but also about a concept where memory, displacement, gesture and collective imagination all contribute to redefining the very notion of building.
Through the lens of photography and collage, the artist Wendie Zahibo questions notions of memory, freedom and taking part in the community. She examines dynamic and regenerative archives, enabling an evolving narrative of Afro-diasporic stories, thus creating spaces for new utopias, encounters and reflections.
*Vernacular architecture is a type of architecture that is widespread within a country or a given area at a particular time.
**A contemporary idea where the extraordinary blends with the ordinary and the boundary between the two must be abolished.
