Homemade Undercuts is a candid, tender and intimate photographic series by Ellen Blair, celebrating hair as a canvas for queer kinship, care and expression. Walk into any queer venue and you’ll spot shaved undercuts and bold, colourful styles. Hair is an accessible way to experiment with how we present ourselves to the world.
For generations, queer people have used haircuts, shaves and colour to form and subvert cultural, political and gender identities, in celebration and defiance, revealing our queer selves to each other and the wider world. For those who don’t align with the gender binary (especially while facing long waits for gender-affirming healthcare), a haircut can take on deeper significance. With many salons feeling unwelcoming, DIY cuts at home or in community spaces become acts of care, solidarity and joyful rebellion. Homemade Undercuts honours this desire to create ourselves in our own image and on our own terms.
