“Every day” is a trip through Israel’s various cultures. Its aim is to highlight what brings people together, such as the links and the fact of belonging to a group, whether it be social, ethnic or religious. “The first time I went to Israel I was bringing with me the stereotypes of a “holy land” coming from the orientalist copies of the 19th century. I had built a mental picture corresponding to the symbolic of the name. By traveling throughout Israel and the occupied territories, I saw dialectics and cultures confront each other. In spite of the disagreement of the international community, the colonies get bigger and the economic discriminations continue. I like to consider this land as a huge Babel tower before God decided to mix languages and to separate men.”

About the artist

A graduate of the Paris Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs, Valentine Vermeil chose documentary photography as a means of expression. Her photographic approach is close to the poetic documentary, she gets her inspiration from the factual data of a place, a situation or a personality and attempts to transcend them in order to show an idealized reality. Her favorite topics deal with the human, as an identity and as a social being linked to a territory.
