Ilgas manor house was built in the 1890s in a baroque style. The building currently houses the study centre for Daugavpils University and has not been redecorated since Soviet times. Living conditions for students there are extreme. By drawing on the characteristic language of documentary photography, the aim was to create images that can be interpreted by viewers by drawing on their past experience. This means that the series does not function as documentary narrative, but more like a deconstruction and negation of the traditional clichés of documentary photography (suffering, thirst, danger…).

About the artist
Born in 1975, Alnis lives and works in Latvia and has a Ph.D. in art education from Daugavpils University there. He has been exhibited widely since 1998.
